Portneuf Greenway Invites The Public To Participate In Trail Improvement Plan

The Portneuf Greenway Foundation is inviting the public to participate in creating a plan to beautify and enhance its 20-plus miles of trails, which are located throughout the greater Pocatello-Chubbuck area.

Planning meetings will take place monthly, beginning on the first of October. The initial focus will be on improving the Portneuf Health Trust Unity Trail, which is located near Portneuf Medical Center, so it is a more inviting place to spend time. A priority will be reducing undesirable vegetation like cheatgrass, and replacing it with native, pollinator-friendly plants.

The Unity Trail improvement plan will become a template for the remaining trails, with the ultimate goal of enhancing all trails over time.

The Greenway Foundation is collaborating on the improvement plan with local students and Master Naturalists. All others who are interested are welcome to join; the first meeting will revolve around a walk to familiarize the group with the Unity Trail. Anyone who is interested in attending can meet at the Portneuf Medical Center front entrance at 4:30 on October 1, 2025.

“We wanted a project that would involve the community through the winter months, and this activity will give us a good plan for the Unity Trail and a good process for planning improvements to Greenway paths throughout the community,” said Dan Harelson, president of the Portneuf Greenway Foundation Board of Directors. “Local students will bring enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the process and the Master Naturalists will bring experience and deep knowledge of native plants and the natural environment. We want to encourage anyone who is interested to join us for what should be an interesting and fun activity.” Please email the Greenway at portneufgreenwayfoundation@gmail.com or message them on Facebook for more information about this project
